A letter from the German Ambassador

London, 5 March 2024

To Lizzie and Robbie Jacobs:

I was very saddened to learn of your father’s passing. Please allow me to express my sincere condolences to you and the rest of your family.

Your father Nicholas Jacobs was and will remain a unique source of inspiration as an outstanding publisher, a passionate friend of German literature and an intellectual connoisseur.

With his unfailing instinct for notable books and literary masterpieces of the highest cultural order, your father challenged, educated and inspired generations of readers. He was instrumental, for instance, in the revival of the work of forgotten German author Hans Fallada, whose novels had almost disappeared from the English-speaking world.

We will always be profoundly grateful for your father’s lasting service to German culture and literature, and his important contribution as a dedicated bridge-builder between the UK and Germany, for which he was awarded one of the highest distinctions of the Federal Republic of Germany. •

Nicholas Jacobs will be remembered with immense gratitude and respect as an inspirational figure in literature and culture in the UK, Germany and beyond.

Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Yours, very sincerely,
Miguel Berger
Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany
